At Walsh Honda, we know that there’s no good time for your vehicle’s transmission to go out on you. However, there are some signs you can watch for that will tell you if there’s a problem. Here are a few things to be on the lookout for when it comes to your transmission:
A Fluid Leak
The transmission area is a sealed component, so you shouldn’t see any leakage. If you notice spots, place a piece of cardboard under your car in the middle and front sections to see if the leak is continuously happening. If so, visit our service center.
Whether you’ve noticed a leak or you’re doing a fluid check, make sure you know what the fluid should be like. Transmission fluid is usually a bright red color and will have a somewhat clean smell, but if the fluid is murky, dark, or smells burnt then there is a problem.
Rough Shifting and Delays
A telltale sign of transmission trouble happens when you’re behind the wheel of your vehicle. Here are a few that have to do with shifting gears:
- You hear a “clunk” when your car shifts gears
- Gear shifts aren’t smooth / the car feels like it is refusing to shift
- There’s a delay from when you shift and the car actually starts driving forward—for example, when switching from park to drive
- The gears grind when shifting
- Your car doesn’t respond when you change gears
If you notice any of these symptoms, bring your car in for service immediately!
The Check Engine Light
The check engine light can mean there’s a transmission problem, but it can also come on for many other reasons. No matter what, you shouldn’t ignore this sign. Bring your vehicle in for a diagnosis as soon as possible when this light appears as waiting could cause further vehicle damage. It’s important to do this even if you don’t think it’s the transmission and even if your vehicle doesn’t show any other symptoms.
